Another year, another Christmas party season to get ready for! This happens to be my favourite time of year just because of the sheer volume of fabulous dresses available to buy – regular readers on this blog will know I have a thing for dresses (some girls like shoes, others bags, I have a wardrobe crammed full of dresses). The choice of Christmas party dresses on the high street gets better and better every year. These are a few of my favourites, which may provide you with a little inspiration.

Black may seem like the safe choice but this season think rich fabrics like velvet and lace or interesting details such as ruffled hems, bows or feathers. Black power dressing was everywhere at the Autumn/Winter 2010 shows (seen at Matthew Williamson, Gucci and Lavin). Natalie Portman shows just how much impact a little black dress can have at her recent Black Swan Première, in Lavin for H&M. She chose to wear minimal accessories and a dramatic coral lip and looked simply stunning.

At the other end of the scale, block red dresses are bang on trend this season. Block red is a dramatic colour choice which will make you stand out from the rest of the fashion pack. Carey Mulligan is a brilliant example of how to wear this look, she looked both adorable and super sexy in block red at the recent Moet British Film awards.

Vintage inspired dresses from the 30s & 40s are also on trend this winter in glistening champagne or gold. Florence Welch shows us just how it’s done in this gorgeous gold beaded, vintage inspired gown at the MTV music awards.

For 2010 the trend for all things sparkly continues. Think a sea of sequins, dazzling all those in your wake. Keep accessories and make up minimal while looking slinky and glamorous. Twilight actress Christian Serratos looked gorgeous in sequins at this years Teen Vogue Party.
